Me at Twenty-Three

- When I wake up in the morning, I have to eat immediately. I wake up starving every day. Also, I can't go to bed without eating something sweet. Sometimes I make brownies or cookies late at night- but not very often.

- I check Jax's room every night for spiders. I am so scared that one of them is going to crawl into his crib or something. One time, I was walking to the laundry room and I saw one crawling across the hall. I hate spiders so much- and now I thoroughly check.

- I love watching Jax play. I laugh and smile to myself all the time and wonder every day how I got so lucky. I truly truly love being a mom. I'm happy that I grew up wanting to be one and planned my life that way. I can honestly say there is nothing I would rather be doing.

- I love brownies. I crave them all the time.

- Cooking exhausts me. I wish I loved it, but I don't. I get so tired from all the prep and all the dishes and all the time it takes. McKay usually ends up doing the dishes. I love him for that. It happened tonight. I usually only make like four dinners a week. The other nights are leftovers...or breakfast. ha.

- I wonder all the time if i'm playing with Jax enough. I'm still trying to balance my time throughout the day. I worry if I'm reading to him enough, or taking him outside enough, or if he is around other kids enough. I want to be his best friend as he grows up so I hope that I spend enough time "bonding." I think about the bonding thing a lot.

- When I need a day to relax, I go to Country Village and walk around the little stores with Jax. I usually don't buy anything, but it's fun just to look. I would much rather look at home decor stuff than anything else.

- When I need a "break" (different than a day to relax, haha), I choose to watch Real Housewives. Addictive. McKay now leaves the room when I watch it. I know, it's terrible- and it's probably not the most appropriate thing to watch- butttt

- I dance unconsciously all the time. And I wish sometimes that McKay would just be more romantic and dance with me in our kitchen. But then I look at him and he's folding the laundry or doing the dishes or chasing Jax around acting like an animal or something and I realize that that in itself is as romantic as it gets.

- Every Saturday I wake up wishing we could go out to breakfast. Then I usually think about it for a while and decide I would rather spend the money on other things. But we usually make breakfast on Saturdays together and it is one of my favorite things about the weekend.

-I check all the time if the garage door is closed because McKay has left it open (multiple times). I got mad at him every. single. time.

- I don't know what kind of music to listen to. When McKay and I met, I loved country and he told me it all sounded the same...and it kinda is staring to, to me. I seriously listen to the Wicked soundtrack in the car and that's it- which I'm really sick of. If not that, it's usually just silence- which makes me feel really old. I can't listen to mainstream all the time because rap comes on and it feels awkward. I mean...I'm a MOM. I still like Lil' Wayne. Weird. Embarassing. True. His voice.

- I tried to garden this year- and I failed. But I am going to try again in the Spring and I'm hoping my plants will actually SURVIVE.

- Almost every night, McKay rubs my feet. A foot rub to me feels better than anything.

- McKay told me this thing he read that I completely agree with: he said that young adults today feel like they need to do something to make an impact or prove themselves to the world; whereas, young adults 20 years ago felt that they needed to earn a living, raise a family, etc. I struggle with that sometimes. I think everyone does. Then I look at Jax and I look at McKay and I realize that proving ourselves to the world does not matter.

- I have the urge to chop my hair off all the time. But I can't. I'm a wimp with my hair. I got it colored yesterday and you can't even tell.

- I cannot fall asleep at night if McKay falls asleep first- and he usually has to wait up for me because I take like 30 minutes to be ready for bed. When I lay in bed and he's sleeping I am scared of every sound- but I don't know why it would matter. He possesses absolutely nothing to protect us.

- I keep telling myself that I need to exercise- then I spend my days in pajamas or yoga pants chasing Jax and running up and down our stairs and I pretty much can check the "exercise" box off for the day.

- I like this blog- because it's one of those things that I feel like is just me. I was watching Jax the other night thinking I am really going to hate myself later for blogging pictures of me every day and not of Jax while he's growing up. How vain. And then I, I need this and I like it. And then I started a blog called "Dear Jax." Just for Jax. And that was that.

And there. That's me at 23.

  1. Ali, you are so cute!! I love your honesty and how much you share with us! Keep it coming! =} I LOVE IT!! I wish my man rubbed my feet almost every night... If I'm lucky I get 3 times a week, thats IF I am lucky. LOL.

  2. I literally cannot believe you're only 23! If I think of me at 23.. on tour, living in hotels, making first class mistakes, totally void of any responsibility and wild.. I truly tip my hat to you, lady. Raising a baby and running a home! I hope you take the time to feel proud of yourself because you really should!

  3. You are adorable! I love knowing you a little better! By the way, in your last post, the lipstick doesn't even make you look pale. It actually brings out the natural flush of your cheeks :) Very pretty!

  4. You are so sweet and such a good mama! Love your outfit. My hubs always leaves the garage door open too. I check it all the time..hahaha.
    Happy Friday! xoxo

  5. 23 is the best!

  6. I can relate to so much of this - Real Housewives and cooking especially! And don't're the best designed mom for your little one. No one could do it better!

  7. Hooray for 23, I'm loving this year too :) Foot rubs are the best. Even just holding my foot makes me feel good haha One time I was sleep talking and told Rich that if he loved me he would hold my foot. Oh dearrrr

    Have a good weekend lady!

    1. hahahaha I have TOTALLY asked for the foot holding thing!! So funny!

  8. I loved reading all this Ali (and your blog is one I alwaaaays make sure and catch up completely on, because I love reading all you write!). It's so interesting to me to read from someone at a different phase of life (i.e. a mom) and I can still relate to a lot of this! I wake up with a HUGE appetite and always eat something sweet after everything I eat! It's just really cool, I feel like we are getting a real slice of you with this blog. And I'm glad it's a priority for you to keep it as an outlet. Thanks for keeping it real!

  17. love this post, such a fun read! thanks for dropping by our blog, would you like to follow each other?

  18. For some reason i thought you were older than 23!
AND NO that was not a blow to your appearance, your'e gorgeous!
I loved reading this...and relate to so much (minus the children/husband part ha). I JUST turned 24 and it's so weird to's weird to be at a place in life where everything is different, and where you're making choices that you thought "only my parents do that" know? :)

    1. I totally know what you mean. That is exactly how I feel. It is weird!

  19. Oh my gosh, I read your comment about spiders in your son's room and I went YES. I have such a fear of spiders and I always check the kids room at night for them, the thought of spiders crawling on them just scares the living daylights out of me. UGH!

Your jacket is just adorable, I really like the cute pattern.

  20. Ali!!

You are so darn cute!! This post is so fitting :-) Love how you aren't afraid to admit anything, you have such confidence!! As far as your hair goes, don't be afraid! I just colored mine dark, on a whim! and I love it :-)

    XO Jenna

  21. You have such a great writing style- I really loved this post! Saw that one of my friend's was following you and I'm glad I stopped over. I'm always saying I'm going to cut my hair into some edgy bob, but never do. Right now it's the shortest it's been in awhile (still touches my shoulders) and I'm sooo ready for it to grow!! :) Also- home decor is my fave stuff to shop/look at/buy! :)

  22. Okay, I am a new fan of your blog. so dang cute! Where is sweater from?! :P
