Today I thought of something. I was thinking about how when we go through (or have gone through) something that had deeply affected us, or changed our life, or had caused us to feel on some level that only "certain people" understand, it can sometimes make us feel entitled- like only people who really understand us can be "let in"- can be our friends, our allies, our confidants. I wondered why it's that way. Shouldn't it be the opposite? Shouldn't we try to explain what we are going through. Articulate it. Be honest about it. Allow others to learn from it too. Of course, no one has an identical experience second- hand. But why is our tendency to only open up to people who "understand" us?
